Control the measured pH together with alkali identity and concentration, wet pick-up, fabric moisture and the approved steaming and wash-off route. Validate cotton and viscose separately. A dried-fabric extract is a separate test, and matching pH does not prove equal alkali reserve. The controls below concern fabric pretreatment, not adding ordinary pretreatment chemicals to a commercial printhead ink.

Why Pretreatment pH Matters in Reactive Digital Printing

Reactive dyes form covalent bonds with cellulose under suitable fixation conditions. In conventional reactive digital printing, the ink normally does not carry all of the chemicals required for fixation because strongly alkaline conditions can reduce ink storage and jetting stability.

Instead, the fabric is commonly pretreated with selected chemicals before printing.

Depending on the process, the pretreatment may contain:

Thickener or surface-control polymer

Alkali

Urea or another moisture-management component

Salt or anti-migration component

Wetting or process auxiliaries

During steaming, the pretreatment and reactive ink interact in a moist environment that allows dye diffusion and reaction with cellulose.

pH matters because it influences the balance between:

Cellulose activation

Reactive dye fixation

Dye hydrolysis

Pretreatment stability

Fabric surface chemistry

Color development

The correct objective is therefore not:

“Use the highest possible pH.”

ეს არის:

“Create sufficient and uniform alkalinity at the correct stage of the printing and fixation process.”

Pretreatment Bath pH Is Not the Same as Fabric pH During Fixation

One of the most common mistakes in reactive digital printing is to discuss “pretreatment pH” as if there were only one pH condition.

In practice, at least four related conditions may need to be distinguished.

1. Pretreatment Bath pH

This is the pH measured in the complete prepared liquor at the reported temperature and sampling time. It is not a measurement of the total quantity of alkali. Two liquors can have the same pH but different resistance to added acid; compare any required titratable alkalinity by a separately validated method with a defined endpoint and reporting basis. A water-testing titration cannot simply be copied into a formulated textile bath without checking matrix effects.

2. Wet Fabric Condition After Application

The amount of alkali actually carried by the fabric depends on the pretreatment concentration and measured fabric pick-up.

3. Dried or Conditioned Fabric State

Drying removes water and can redistribute soluble chemicals. Report the pH of a defined aqueous fabric extract rather than describing dry fabric as having a directly comparable liquid pH. ISO 3071:2020 concerns the pH of textile aqueous extracts; it does not measure the instantaneous dye–fiber environment inside a steamer.

4. Steaming/Fixation Environment

Heat, moisture and the chemistry of the selected alkali system can change the effective alkalinity during fixation.

For example, sodium bicarbonate is commonly used in reactive printing because it provides a relatively manageable pretreatment condition and can generate stronger alkaline fixation conditions when heated.

This means buyers should avoid comparing two reactive pretreatments using only the tank pH.

The more useful chain is:

Bath pH → Fabric Alkali Add-On → Drying/Conditioning → Steaming Environment → Finished Fabric

How Alkali Supports Reactive Dye Fixation

Reactive dyes need a suitable alkaline environment to react efficiently with cellulosic fibers.

Alkali promotes ionization of cellulose hydroxyl groups, which supports the chemical reaction between cellulose and the reactive group of the dye.

Published reviews and reactive inkjet studies consistently identify alkali pretreatment as an important part of conventional reactive inkjet printing on cotton.

For technical background, see the review of inkjet printing of polymer textile materials and research on alkaline pretreatment for reactive inkjet printing.

However, stronger alkalinity also increases the possibility of reactive dye hydrolysis.

Hydrolyzed reactive dye can no longer form the intended covalent bond with cellulose in the same way and must later be removed during washing.

Therefore, pH control is a balance between:

Enough alkalinity for fixation ↔ Avoiding unnecessary dye hydrolysis and process instability

What Can Happen When Pretreatment Alkalinity Is Too Low?

If the pretreatment does not create sufficient fixation conditions for the selected reactive ink system, possible symptoms include:

Lower color yield after washing

Lower dye fixation

Higher amount of unfixed dye removed during wash-off

Color differences between shades

Production sensitivity to steaming conditions

However, low color strength should not automatically be diagnosed as a low-pH problem.

The same symptom can also result from:

Low fabric pick-up

Insufficient pretreatment add-on

Incorrect steaming

Low moisture during fixation

Ink loading

Poor pretreatment uniformity

ჭარბი შეღწევა

This is why pH should be checked together with the complete production conditions.

What Can Happen When Pretreatment Alkalinity Is Too High?

More alkali does not automatically produce better reactive printing.

Excessive alkalinity can increase the risk of:

Reactive dye hydrolysis

Higher wash-off demand

Shade changes

Reduced storage stability of some pretreatment systems

Changes in polymer viscosity or rheology

Fabric handling differences

Strong alkaline systems may also behave differently during drying and storage than milder alkali systems.

If pretreated fabric is stored before printing, the stability of the prepared fabric should be evaluated rather than assuming that the same result will remain unchanged indefinitely.

Older reactive-printing research has also shown that the interaction among paste alkalinity, storage time and fixation conditions can materially influence color strength.

The practical lesson is:

Optimize the alkaline system as part of the complete process instead of maximizing pH as an isolated variable.

How Cotton Responds to Pretreatment pH

Cotton is a natural cellulosic fiber with a crystalline and amorphous structure.

Reactive inkjet pretreatment on cotton needs to create sufficient surface control and fixation chemistry without causing unnecessary penetration or dye hydrolysis.

Important cotton variables include:

Mercerization history

Fabric absorbency

Fabric weight

Weave density

Residual finishing chemicals

Moisture before pretreatment

Published reactive digital printing work frequently uses sodium alginate, urea and sodium bicarbonate-type pretreatment systems on cotton, followed by drying, inkjet printing, steaming and washing.

For example, one published cotton inkjet study used a sodium alginate/urea/sodium bicarbonate pretreatment applied by padding before drying and printing. The specific formula is a research condition, not a universal production recipe. See the study on reactive digital printing of mercerized cotton.

The most important implication for production is that cotton pH optimization should be connected to actual fabric add-on and fixation conditions.

How Viscose Can Respond Differently

Viscose is also cellulosic, so reactive dyes can form covalent bonds with the fiber under suitable conditions.

However, viscose and cotton should not automatically use the same pretreatment operating window.

Viscose can differ in:

Water absorbency

ბერვის ქცევა

Liquid penetration rate

Fabric dimensional stability

Wet strength behavior depending on construction

Pretreatment distribution through the fabric

This means a pretreatment that gives stable add-on and surface localization on cotton may penetrate differently into viscose.

As a result, changing pH or alkali concentration can interact with:

აყვანა

ნესტი

Polymer concentration

მელნის შეღწევა

დათბილვა ორთქლით

The correct approach is to treat viscose as its own application substrate and establish a separate working window.

A cotton setting can be used as an initial reference, but it should not be treated as an approved viscose specification without testing.

Cotton vs. Viscose: Practical pH Comparison

შეფასების არეალი

ბამბა

ვიზკოზა

ბოჭკოს ოჯახი

ბუნებრივი ცელულოზა

რეგენერირებული ცელულოზა

რეაქტიული საღებავის თავსებადობა

Suitable under controlled alkaline fixation

Suitable under controlled alkaline fixation

შთამნთქმელობა

Depends strongly on pretreatment and fabric construction

Can be highly absorbent; Retain the ink supplier’s approved chemistry unless a separate controlled development trial supports a change.

The important point is:

Do not select the alkali only by the pH number. wd-8a731d55">This can create different fixation performance even when the measured bath pH is identical.

For this reason, pH optimization should be linked to:

Bath Composition → Measured Pick-Up → Fabric Alkali Add-On → Steaming → Wash-Off

If color yield changes after changing fabric construction, check pick-up before changing pH.

pH, Drying and Chemical Migration

In a conventional dry pretreatment route, the applied fabric is dried before printing.

During drying, soluble chemicals can move as water evaporates.

The degree of migration depends on:

სველად აღება

Drying rheology

Alkali concentration

This can create local differences in effective alkalinity even when the pretreatment bath is perfectly mixed.

When evaluating a pH change, keep the drying route constant during the first comparison.

Otherwise, the mill may not know whether the result came from the new alkaline condition or from a different migration pattern.

pH Control in Wet-on-Wet Reactive Digital Printing

Wet-on-wet printing creates another layer of pH control because the fabric still contains substantial pretreatment moisture when the ink is printed.

In this route, alkali is present in a hydrated environment at the moment the dye ink reaches the fabric.

This can change:

Dye diffusion

Polymer swelling

Ink spreading

Local concentration of alkali

Time available before fixation

Treat wet-on-wet as a distinct process window. Record moisture at printing, the elapsed time from application to printing, ink loading and time to fixation. Compare with a controlled dry-route reference only after both follow their approved fixation and washing route. A change in color or bleeding alone does not identify a pH mechanism.

For production, wet-on-wet pH development should therefore be treated as a separate formulation project rather than simply using the dry-route pretreatment and skipping the dryer.

How Should Pretreatment pH Be Measured?

1. Use a Calibrated pH Meter

Use a pH meter and electrode suitable for the complete liquor. Follow the instrument’s calibration procedure with fresh, traceable buffers that cover the expected range, record buffer temperature, verify calibration and rinse between samples. Record the electrode, calibration result and any unstable reading; do not average away persistent drift.

2. Record Temperature

Record the actual sample temperature after equilibration. Automatic temperature compensation corrects the electrode response; it does not convert every solution’s chemistry to the pH it would have at 25°C. Compare samples at a defined common temperature, or use a validated temperature-specific reference.

3. Define the Sample

Clearly state whether you are measuring:

The pretreatment bath

A diluted pretreatment

A fabric water extract

A stored pretreatment after a defined time

4. Measure at a Consistent Time

If the formulation changes with storage, measure pH immediately after preparation and after the intended holding period.

5. Do Not Compare Different Methods as if They Were Equivalent

A tank reading and a fabric-extract reading are not interchangeable. For an extract comparison, record the sampled face and roll position, textile mass basis, extraction liquid, liquor-to-textile ratio, extraction time and temperature, agitation and measurement timing. Use the agreed test procedure consistently and include an untreated-fabric control where useful. Do not label a modified internal extraction as a standard test without checking the complete standard.

The test method should be recorded together with the result.

How to Build a pH Working Window

The most useful Why does reactive digital printing pretreatment need alkali?

Reactive dyes require suitable alkaline conditions during fixation so the dye can react with cellulose. In conventional inkjet printing, much of this alkalinity is supplied through the fabric pretreatment.

2. What is the best pH for reactive digital printing pretreatment?

There is no universal pH value. The correct working range depends on alkali type, ink chemistry, fabric, pick-up, drying or wet-state route, steaming and washing.

3. Is higher pH always better for color yield?

No. Sufficient alkalinity is important for fixation, but excessive alkalinity can promote reactive dye hydrolysis and may change pretreatment stability.

4. Can cotton and viscose use the same pretreatment pH?

They can sometimes use a similar starting formulation, but viscose and cotton should be validated separately because their absorbency, swelling and penetration behavior can differ.

5. Why does color look strong before washing but become weak after washing?

This may indicate insufficient dye fixation, although steaming, moisture, ink, pick-up and wash-off conditions should also be investigated.

6. Is sodium bicarbonate suitable for reactive digital pretreatment?

It is widely used in conventional reactive printing pretreatments because it provides manageable alkalinity before printing and stronger fixation conditions during heating. The exact dosage still requires validation.

7. Can sodium carbonate replace sodium bicarbonate directly?

It should not be treated as a direct one-to-one replacement. The stronger alkalinity can change pretreatment stability, dye hydrolysis and fixation behavior.

8. Does pretreatment pH affect thickener viscosity?

It can, depending on the polymer, salt level and complete formulation. Always measure viscosity after the full pretreatment has been prepared.

9. Why can the same bath pH give different printing results?

Fabric pick-up, alkali add-on, drying migration, moisture, steaming and fabric absorbency can differ even when the liquid pH is the same.

10. How should pH be measured on pretreated fabric?

Use an agreed aqueous-extract procedure and report its conditions. The extract indicates the tested textile’s aqueous acidity or alkalinity under that method; it is neither the original bath pH nor a direct reading of the fixation microenvironment. Keep any titratable-alkalinity result separate.

11. Is pH control different in wet-on-wet printing?

Yes. Because the pretreatment remains hydrated at printing, moisture, alkali distribution, polymer swelling and the time before printing become especially important.

12. What data should I send FSX Chemical for pH troubleshooting?

Send the fabric type, pretreatment formula, alkali type and dosage, measured pH and method, pick-up, viscosity, dry or wet route, ink system, steaming and washing conditions.

Optimize Reactive Digital Pretreatment pH with FSX Chemical

If your reactive digital printing shows unstable color yield, excessive bleeding, poor fixation or differences between cotton and viscose, FSX Chemical can help review the pretreatment chemistry together with the actual application conditions.

For a more relevant comparison, send:

Your current pretreatment product or TDS

Reactive ink system

Cotton or viscose fabric details

Current polymer/thickener dosage

Alkali type and dosage

Pretreatment pH and measurement method

Viscosity and test method

Measured fabric pick-up

Dry or wet-on-wet process

გამშრობის პირობები

Steaming and washing conditions

Current color, bleeding, fixation or cost target

დაიწყეთ ნიმუშები და შესაბამისობა to establish a controlled candidate and process comparison.

You can also review the FSX Chemical Digital Printing Paste route or მოითხოვეთ ფაბრიკის პირდაპირი ფასი once the technically suitable direction is clear.

For technical discussion, დაუკავშირდით FSX ქიმიკალს with your current TDS, fabric information and pretreatment data📧 ელფოსტა: Service@fsxchemical.com

The correct pretreatment pH is not a universal number.
