Textile printing buyers should use the TDS to select a possible grade, the SDS to review safety and handling, and the batch COA to confirm that the supplied material meets the agreed quality requirements. None of these documents should be used as a substitute for sample testing and production validation.
Three Documents
Three Different Jobs
TDS, SDS and COA are related but not interchangeable. A TDS is not proof of an individual batch result. An SDS is not a product-performance specification. A COA does not explain the complete application or safety requirements. Buyers should read the three documents together and check that the product name, grade, manufacturer or issuer, test method and batch information remain consistent.

How to Read a TDS
Begin by confirming the product identity and application scope before comparing any technical number.

Typical value is not always a guaranteed batch limit.
A TDS may show a typical, reference or target value rather than the acceptance range applied to every production batch. Ask the supplier which values are guaranteed specifications and which are provided only as general technical guidance.

How to Read an SDS
SDS information is primarily used for hazard communication, handling, storage, exposure control, first aid and emergency planning.
The current GHS-aligned format uses sixteen sections. OSHA requires the specified information for Sections 1–11 and 16, while the complete GHS-aligned layout also includes ecological, disposal, transport and regulatory sections.

SDS and MSDS usually refer to the same document family.
“MSDS” is the older term still used by some buyers and suppliers. “SDS” is the current GHS-aligned term. A change from MSDS to SDS does not turn the document into a product specification or batch COA.

How to Read a Batch COA
The COA should connect the supplied material to a specific product, batch and set of applicable test results.
- Product name and exact grade
- Batch or lot number
- Manufacturing or release date where applicable
- Expiry or retest information where applicable
- Each applicable test item
- Specification or acceptance range
- Actual numerical result where available
- Test method or method reference
- Release or conformity status
- Authorized approval or signature
- Document issuer or responsible laboratory
- Revision or document-control information
The batch number is the traceability link.
The batch number on the COA should match the supplied packaging, invoice, packing list or other applicable shipment record. A COA with no clear batch connection provides limited evidence for the material actually delivered.

Match the Product Across All Documents
Document consistency is easier to evaluate when the same product identity is visible across the quotation, sample, TDS, SDS, COA and shipment records.

Different issuer names do not automatically mean the document is invalid.
A brand, legal company, original manufacturer, testing laboratory, distributor or certification body may appear on different documents for different reasons. The important question is whether the issuer’s role, product scope and batch relationship are clear and verifiable.

Why the Original Issuer Should Be Preserved
A technical or compliance document should continue to identify the entity responsible for issuing the information. Removing or replacing the original company, laboratory or certification-body name can make the document difficult to verify and may misrepresent who performed the testing or issued the certification.
Brand Presentation
The website, quotation or document cover may identify the international business brand used for customer communication.
Original Document Issuer
The original SDS, COA, test report or certificate should retain the responsible manufacturer, laboratory, certification body or other issuing entity shown on the source document.
Verify the role instead of forcing every document to use one name.
Buyers should be able to identify who supplies the product, who manufactures or tests it, who issued the document and which batch, product or certification scope the document covers.

Missing product grade
A general family name may not identify which grade, viscosity route or application the document actually covers.
Viscosity without method
A value without concentration, temperature, instrument, spindle and RPM cannot be compared reliably.
COA without batch number
The document cannot be clearly connected to the supplied production batch.
TDS used as batch proof
A general specification sheet does not prove that one shipment was tested and released.
SDS used as performance proof
Safety and handling information does not confirm colour yield, viscosity stability, wash-off or application suitability.
Outdated revision
An older document may use a previous product description, specification, address or regulatory format.
Altered issuer details
Removing the original issuer may prevent verification of the laboratory, manufacturer or certification source.

What is the main difference between a TDS and COA?
A TDS normally describes the product grade, intended use and reference or typical specification. A COA relates to a specific batch and reports the applicable test results or conformity status for that batch. Is an SDS the same as an MSDS?
MSDS is the older term still used in some markets. SDS is the current GHS-aligned term and normally follows a structured sixteen-section format. Can an SDS prove that a textile thickener is high quality?
No. An SDS communicates safety, handling and hazard information. Product quality should be evaluated using the TDS, batch COA, sample testing and actual printing performance. Should every COA contain actual numerical results?
Numerical tests should normally show numerical results where applicable. Some visual or qualitative tests may be reported as conforming to an agreed requirement. The reporting format should still be clear and traceable to the batch. Can two suppliers’ TDS viscosity values be compared directly?
Only when the concentration, temperature, instrument, spindle or rotor, RPM, preparation method and units are consistent. Otherwise, the values may not be comparable. Why might the company name differ between documents?
Different documents may identify a brand, legal entity, original manufacturer, testing laboratory, distributor or certification body. The relationship and issuing role should be clear, and the original issuer should remain identifiable. Does a COA guarantee printing performance?
No. A COA confirms applicable batch-test results, but final printing performance also depends on fabric, dye or ink, recipe, equipment, fixation and production conditions.
