CMS vs. Tamarind Gum for Polyester Disperse Printing: A Practical Comparison
Compare an identified CMS grade with an identified tamarind-derived thickener in the complete polyester disperse screen-printing process. The meaningful result is acceptable printed fabric at a verified production cost, not the highest stock viscosity or lowest powder price. Confirm the material identity, preparation route, paste stability, screen behavior, thermal fixation and post-treatment before choosing either route or a blend.
Define Both Products Before Comparing Them
“CMS” is used in chemical literature for carboxymethyl starch, but the FSX CMS commercial series must be evaluated by its exact grade documentation. Do not infer composition, starch source, degree of substitution or ionic character from the series name alone.
Likewise, tamarind kernel powder, purified tamarind gum and carboxymethyl tamarind gum are not interchangeable specifications. Modification and formulation can change preparation, viscosity and compatibility. Ask each supplier to identify the supplied product, recommended preparation, supported application and batch test method.
This guide concerns direct screen printing of polyester with disperse dyes. It is not a recipe for sublimation transfer ink, inkjet ink or pigment-binder printing.
Compare Evidence, Not Product-Family Rankings
| Decision area | Evidence for each candidate | What the result does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Приготовление | Concentration, water, mixing, temperature, hydration time and residue | One cold-water result represents every grade in the family |
| Paste flow | Specified viscosity readings plus shear response, recovery and screen release | Equal viscosity means equal printing behavior |
| Recipe compatibility | Complete dye/auxiliary paste through the intended holding period | A water-only stock test predicts production stability |
| Color and definition | Same fabric, dye input, design, drying, fixation and post-treatment | Darker wet paste means higher final color yield |
| Стоимость | Actual consumption, accepted output, preparation, cleaning and rework | Lower purchase price means lower production cost |
Prepare Each Grade Correctly, Then Run a Controlled Comparison
Use the supplier’s appropriate preparation procedure for each grade. If one product requires a different hydration temperature or time, record that difference as a production requirement and cost; do not deliberately under-prepare it to impose identical mixing.
First compare equal as-supplied dosage when useful for screening. Then optimize each candidate within its documented working range to meet the same print requirements. Keep final paste mass and dye and auxiliary concentrations consistent, accounting for water introduced with stock pastes. Label equal-dose and optimized-dose results separately.
Record instrument, spindle, speed, sample temperature, reading time and rest history for viscosity. Compare stock paste and complete color paste; do not compare one candidate before dye addition and another afterward.
Build a Screen and Holding Trial Around the Actual Job
Use a diagnostic design containing fine lines, adjacent colors and solid areas on the same prepared polyester lot. Keep screen, squeegee or rod, speed and pressure settings documented. Observe screen passage, incomplete filling, tailing, penetration and stop-start recovery.
Repeat the assessment after the planned holding time and relevant circulation history. Include residue, gel, separation and foam observations. A single initial viscosity reading can miss a paste that changes during the shift. Set job-specific acceptance limits before examining candidate results.
Judge Dye Transfer After Fixation and Post-Treatment
Keep the disperse dye and fixation route constant in the initial comparison. Record the material’s thermal exposure as far as practical, not only the machine setpoint. Use the same qualified washing or reduction-clearing route when required for the fabric and dye system.
Measure color and shade after that process, together with background staining, rubbing performance and fabric hand. Differences may come from paste deposition, drying migration or fixation, not only polymer–dye interactions. Confirm the cause before making a general claim about CMS or tamarind dye release.
Evaluate Blends as New Formulations
A CMS–tamarind blend is a new candidate rather than an automatically compatible average of the two products. Do not copy a published blend ratio into production or assume a 1:1 substitution.
Begin with the approved incumbent as the control. Test a small, documented blend series within supplier-supported limits, keeping the basis explicit: as-supplied powder, dry matter or stock-paste mass. Account for stock concentrations and carrier water. Check hydration, complete-paste compatibility, holding, filtration and final print performance for every candidate.
Natural tamarind should not automatically be called anionic; the chemical modification and other formulation ingredients matter. Nor should an unidentified CMS grade be assigned charge behavior without product information.
Compare Total Cost per Accepted Output
For each trial, calculate thickener cost from the actual weighed amount and delivered price. Add preparation time, energy where relevant, filtration waste, cleaning, downtime and rework using recorded values. Divide comparable total operating cost by accepted printed length or area; state fabric width and quality criteria so the denominator is consistent.
Do not count all rejected fabric as a thickener cost unless the investigation supports that cause. Run sensitivity calculations when a claimed preparation or reject-rate advantage has not yet been established in production.
Release the First Commercial Batch Against the Approved Trial
Record candidate grade, supplier lot, COA, trial recipe and acceptance results. Check the first bulk batch with the same agreed preparation and test method, and retain representative samples. Repeat relevant application checks after a material change, unexplained complaint or persistent QC drift.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
Which route is better for polyester disperse printing?
The route that meets the mill’s printing, stability and finished-fabric requirements at the verified cost. Neither product-family name establishes a universal winner.
Can I compare both products at the same viscosity?
Yes, as one defined comparison, but also record powder consumption and flow under printing conditions. Matching one viscosity reading does not match screen release or fixation performance.
Does natural origin predict better environmental performance?
No. Assess the actual formulation, required documentation, dosage, energy, wash-off and waste route. Do not infer certification or lower impact solely from the feedstock name.
